Purple Rain, Purple is Reigning

Purple is definitely the 'it' colour this season and was also featured in our Fashion Hot Trends for Winter 2009. Celebrities from Hollywood to Bollywood are making their fashion statement with purple. Brighten up your day with Purple this season.

Hollywood Celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Kate Bosworth, Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Beyonce and Bollywood babes like Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Prachi Desai, Payal Rohtagi, Anushka Dandekar, Farah Khan have all been rocking purple lately.

Make sure you add purple to your wardrobe - you can wear a purple shirt, skirt, jacket or even a purple dress (loved purple satin dress at MANGO store). If you aren't sure about wearing purple, then add a splash of the color to your outfit instead of having it as a main color - try some purple shoes (there are awesome purple shoes at Charles and Keith) or a necklace or bracelet with purple gems or even a purple bag or clutch.

Celebrity Watch

Who wears yellow better?
Neeta in saree, Shamita in Dress, Ekta in net or Sarah Jessica Parker in a casual look?

Personally when it comes to styling Neeta Lulla would be the last person on earth I would take advice from, but hey she proved us wrong this one time. She looks nice in this yellow saree and a nice flowery brooch she pinned her saree with; and like the way she went subtle with the accessories (Neeta please do something about your hairstyle, you for sure will look better with a change).
Shamita Singha's yellow dress is in perfect yellow shade for winter. She for sure had the temperature soaring with her fab dress and minimilastic everything. But I think a nice pair of earrings would have completed her look. Though she still looks nice. What are your thoughts about it?
Don't have much say on Ekta Raheja's yellow apperance. The blouse does not seem to go too well is all I would comment. What do you think of Ekta?
.

.
What do you say - Sarah Jessica Parker's outfit Fab or Drab?
Fashion Forward SJP in a blue silk skirt, belted yellow vest and high heeled strappy sandal (its nice) for a Spring scene at the historic Big Apple landmark. This picture is taken outside NYC Public Library from the movie Sex and the City.

Yellow is hot this winter and we've seen lots of yellow in celebrities' wardrobe.

Fashion's Cast really need Fashion Advice

What were they thinking? Or were they thinking at all.
.
Kangana at Fashion's success bash
.
Dear Kangana, Halloween was like last month, you were a little late for this appearance. Ugly dress, scary look, porcelain doll make-up.

What was Kangana thinking when she decided on this yellow and red look (below) at her movie Fashion's first look held at Cinemax (ghastly is the word). The dress looks tawdry (we've heard she has designed it herself). I think the picture says it all I don't have to elaborate.

.
And really Priyanka please don't make much efforts. Every time you do that, it is a big disappointment. This peach dress is really a horrendous selection, couldn't you come up with something better? You should have taken some tips from your stylist from Dostana.

Mughda you were just coming along fine, but that purple (velvet is it?) skirt and that belt completely ruined everything. A simple black skinny jeans would have done just fine (we would have actually liked it).
.

So what went wrong with these girls? No personal stylist?

Mallika Sherawat - Fashion Faux Pas or Applause?

Be honest Mallika were you trying to copy Beyonce? Well please don't do it next time. Had it not been for her hairdo and makeup, Mallika would have looked just fine.

Mallika Sherawat at 16th Diversity Awards (above)

The Shahab Durazi dress (below, left) is not at all flattering. After looking at these two appearances, she is actually looking alright in the Little Black Dress, though the shoes don't go so well. We know its Chanel but that does not mean it has to look good. A nice strappy stilletos would have looked just perfect.
Dear Mallika, you don't have to look ugly or funny to create a sexy image. Honestly. You can look nice and fashionable and still look sexy. And trust me YOU WILL STILL BE IN LIMELIGHT. Take some tips from Hollywood babes (oh no not Madonna).
.

Why don't these Bollywood girls hire a good personal stylist, aren't they tired of their fashion disasters? Or they really think they look nice?
What do you think?

Is your lipstick safe? - LEAD IN LIPSTICK

I am sure that by now you have heard about the buzz about the report released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics about potentially toxic amounts of lead in lipstick. Or must have come across the email claiming that many lipstick brands have high lead content that can cause cancer and even named about ten brands that contain lead (it said you could check this with a Gold ring, if your lipstick turns black if you scratch with your Gold ring then it has lead).
.
Many articles on the internet claimed that 'this was a email hoax'. But IT WAS NOT A HOAX (except of course the gold ring bit in the email).

.
Think twice before putting on your lipstick
Indeed many cosmetic giants use high lead content in their lipsticks and considering that lipstick is a make-up staple of millions of women this was very alarming.

From a news article on reuters: "The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said tests on 33 brand-name red lipsticks by the Bodycote Testing Group in Santa Fe Spring, California, found that 61 percent had detectable lead levels of 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm)". It further says, "One-third of the lipsticks tested contained an amount of lead that exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy -- a standard established to protect children from ingesting lead, the group said. Thirty-nine percent of the lipsticks tested had no discernible lead, it said."

Higher Levels of Lead were found in lipsticks from:
- Cover Girl
- Arbonne
- L'oreal
- Christian Dior (yes even I was appalled to know that such big brand can be on the list, and we pay them exorbitant amount to play with our lives, just so their lipsticks last longer. What a shame!!!!)

Lipsticks are best avoided by pregnant women: Experts say pregnant women should be extra aware when it comes to lead-tainted products. "Lead is a proven neurotoxin. It can cause learning disabilities. It's also linked to miscarriage and infertility," said Stacy Malkan of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. I would advice pregnant women to consult their physician before choosing their cosmetics (though I am not sure how many Indian physicians will be able to help you).

Be aware of what you are putting on your lips. If you have a doubt or are concerned write an email to the company requesting them to send you the information on the lead content of their lipsticks. Most good brands will provide you all the details.
.
.
After all what's in a lipstick
Don't be stingy on your lipstick and only buy good quality products. Cheap lipsticks available in the market maybe easy on your budget, but they can cost you your life.

You cannot not be sure of even the good brands, so a cheaper brand will contain what not. And as you know lipstick is something we women cannot live without. So please don't buy cheap quality lipstick.

List of companies you can consider buying:
Here are a few brands which have no lead or very low level of lead as per the legal limit that you could buy:
1. Clarins
2. Aveda
3. Suki
4. Shiseido
5. Kiehl
(will keep updating the list after getting the lead content info)

Liquid Lipsticks and colour lip glosses are safer than the lipstick candy in terms of lead content. And I love the glosses, it makes the lips look so delicious. So why not pick them?

I came across an article that gave a list of lipsticks with less than 0.02 parts per million (ppm) lead:
1. Avon Ultra Color Rich Cherry Jubilee
2. Body Shop Lip Colour Garnet
3. Body Shop Lip Colour Garnet
4. Clinique Long Last Lipstick Merlot
5. Dior Replenishing Lipcolor Red Premiere
6. Estee Lauder Maraschino
7. MAC Matte Lipstick Viva Glam 1
8. Revlon Superlustrous Love That Red
9. Revlon Superlustrous Bed of Roses
10. Revlon Colorstay Lipcolor Red Velvet
11. Tarte Inside Out Vitamin Lipstick
12. Wet N Wild Mega Colors Cherry Blossom
13. Wet N Wild Mega Colors Cherry Blossom

There is no harm in knowing both the arguments
Contrary to this campaign claiming that lipstick contain lead, some experts are still claiming the authenticity of the report by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Well we would not know how much truth is there unless we do the check ourselves. My advice is to be an educated consumer and be cautious. There is no harm in switching brands if you are doubtful.

Read Paula's Report in which she cites the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics as "swift in crafting a press release that is the very definition of fear mongering."

SCARVES - fashion item to pep you up INSTANTLY!!!

Scarves are beautiful and really trendy piece of accessory. They are the most versatile of all pieces of clothes. They add color and style to any outfit and can change the look of an ensemble almost immediately!

Scarves make a big fashion statement and are closely associated with certain famous fashion names, like Hermes (did you read Devil Wears Prada? how that woman Miranda drops her Hermes scarves everywhere).

In my opinion a scarf can do the whole outfit (instead of putting on loads of accessories to complete the look) and guess what they are incredibly inexpensive.

Creating different looks

Feminine and sophisticated - the trick to being trendy is to wear your scarf imaginative ways.

So be creative with your scarf and have fun trying out the many different ways to wear your fashion scarves.

You can wear it around your neck loosely knotted, tie it around your waist to make it a wonderful belt, wear it as a headband with the ends loosely hanging over your front shoulder, tie one around the handle of your handbag, or wear a long scarf wrapped around your head in the style of a snood.

- On of the most popular (and currently on-trend) looks is to wear a patterned scarf tied-up in a bow over sweaters and under jackets and blazers. Pick from paisley to polka-dots.

- Add glam to your simple tee or make your simple cami-top look classy, just wear a piece of scarf with your outfit.
.
Kareena Kapoor (right) looked very urban chic outside the airport with her beau and at (left) at Time India Food Guide Awards.

- To add a splash of colour to your conservative or a plain boring suit consider a tiny stand-out scarf that will peak out.

- Another great way to use a scarf is as a head wrap or headband to bring a boring look truly to life like Audrey Hepburn, the way she wears the scarf around her head looks so classic. And I love the headband look of Audrey.

.

Scarves - always fashionable

The scarf has been around for more than hundred years and has been mostly used as an utilitarian fashion accessory. But today its not just 'utility', it is a BIG FASHION ACCESORY that instantly turns a woman look chic and stylish or trendy and funky.
For the women of Paris, the scarf has been a standard wardrobe element regardless of age or economic status, and they are famous for their ability to knot, toss, wrap, tie, loop, fold, etc. in an amazing assortment of stylish looks.

Dress it up or dress it down. Keep a scarf handy so you never need to be chilly or poorly accessorized.

An investment fashion accessory

If you are on a tight budget, adding a scarf to your wardrobe will make it look plentiful even if you wear the same outfit over and over again. Adding a scarf can update your look, making people think you have a whole new wardrobe even if it is just the scarf you have added!

The pink top Kareena is wearing (top), minus the scarf and a new jeans can make her look completely different the next time.

Scarves for summer

Its a general belief that Scarves are only a winter fashion item. BUT IT IS WRONG. Scarves have no particular season to be worn. Stores bring out various types of scarves for every season and weather type.

For summer choose scarves made of flowie, light weight cottons or light textures such as chiffon. Satin and polyester blends are thin and cool and will add detail without adding to the heat factor. You can choose from many complimentary styles and patterns.

In fact once the AC cools the summer temperature, the summer attire can get uncomfortable indoors. With a scarf, you have the added comfort of warmth as well as the flexibility to take it off outdoors if you get too warm.

Celebrities making fashion statement with scarves

Scarves are timeless, beautiful piece of accessory, so lots of celebs wear scarves to all kinds of events, from a walk in the city to red carpets of most glamorous ceremonies. Take a look at these stylish women and their use of the scarf.
